Glossary
Key terms for the age of AI search.
AEO (Answer Engine Optimization)
The practice of optimizing content so AI assistants cite and recommend your business when users ask relevant questions.
GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)
A related discipline focused on making your content the kind that generative AI models draw from when forming responses.
Mention rate
The percentage of AI queries about your category in which your brand is explicitly mentioned. The headline metric in every Am I Findable? report.
Share of voice (SOV)
The proportion of AI mentions in your category that go to each brand, including competitors. Tracks who owns the conversation.
Citation source
The website or URL that an AI model references when generating an answer. Being cited on the right sources is key to being found.
Sentiment
Whether an AI's mention of your brand is positive, neutral, or negative. A high mention rate with poor sentiment can still hurt conversions.
Position when found
Where your brand appears in an AI response — first, second, third, etc. Earlier positions correlate with higher click-through and consideration.
Topic
A group of related queries that represent a single buyer intent — e.g. "best HVAC company in Austin." Am I Findable? tests multiple phrasings per topic. (Called a "cluster" in some technical views.)
Theme
A recurring aspect AI models bring up when discussing your category — e.g. pricing, durability, customer service. Distinct from a topic: a single topic's answers can surface many themes.
AI engine
One of the major AI assistants tested: ChatGPT (OpenAI), Claude (Anthropic), Gemini (Google), or Perplexity.
